 Description:

A Hyderabad traffic constable has been booked after a man died trying to evade a police check. Eyewitnesses allege police misconduct. Read the full story and investigation updates here.

Introduction

A tragic incident in Hyderabad has sparked outrage and raised questions about the conduct of traffic enforcement authorities. A 34-year-old man, Joshi Babu, lost his life while attempting to evade a routine traffic check, leading to a criminal case against a traffic constable. Here's everything you need to know about the incident, eyewitness accounts, and ongoing investigations.

What Happened?

On April 13, 2025, Joshi Babu, a carpenter from Roda Mistry Nagar, was riding his motorcycle towards Panjagutta. He was flagged down at a traffic checkpoint near the IDPL Township main gate in Balanagar. Instead of stopping, Babu allegedly tried to flee the scene, lost control of his vehicle, collided with another, and was tragically run over by a Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) bus.

Family and Eyewitness Claims

While police reports suggest that Babu lost balance while trying to escape, his family and eyewitnesses present a different version. According to them, Constable Gopal grabbed Babu's collar, which caused him to lose control and fall under the oncoming bus. Serious allegations have also emerged about the constable possibly being under the influence of alcohol during the incident.

Legal Action Taken

Following a formal complaint filed by the victim's brother, authorities have registered a case against Constable Gopal under charges of negligence leading to death. A medical examination has been ordered to determine if the constable was intoxicated at the time.

Public Reaction and Protests

News of the incident quickly spread, triggering large-scale protests in Balanagar. Locals accused the police of brutality and negligence, demanding justice for the victim. The protests led to traffic blockades, and authorities had to resort to a lathicharge to control the unrest.

Police Statement and Investigation

Hyderabad police maintain that Joshi Babu lost balance independently. However, CCTV footage is currently under review to verify the exact sequence of events. The investigation is ongoing, and the case is expected to be closely monitored given the public attention.

Conclusion

This tragic incident brings to light serious concerns about the use of force during traffic stops and the accountability of law enforcement officers. As the investigation unfolds, the people of Hyderabad—and beyond—wait for justice and clarity.

Smith v Hughes (1959): A Landmark Case on Interpreting the Law

Smith v Hughes (1959): Introduction The case of Smith v Hughes (1959) is one of the most iconic examples in English law that demonstrates the Mischief Rule of statutory interpretation. At first glance, it may seem like a simple case involving a street solicitor (a prostitute), but it ended up clarifying how judges should interpret the true purpose of a law. Facts of the Case Mrs. Smith, the defendant, was a prostitute. However, unlike many others, she wasn’t soliciting from the street. Instead, she operated from inside her apartment in London. She would call out or attract clients through her window or by tapping on the glass, facing the public street below. She was charged under Section 1(1) of the Street Offences Act 1959 , which says: “It shall be an offence for a common prostitute to loiter or solicit in a street or public place for the purpose of prostitution.” Now here's the twist: Smith argued she wasn’t in the street , so she claimed the law didn’t apply to her ...
