It provides a legal framework for registering and protecting designs applied to industrial articles. Purpose: Encourage creativity, innovation, and investment in industries by protecting the aesthetic appearance of products. Simply put: The Designs Act protects how a product looks , not how it works. 2. Definition of Design (Section 2(d)) “Design means the features of shape, configuration, pattern or ornament or composition of lines or colours applied to any article, which in the finished article appeal to and are judged solely by the eye.” Key points: Must be applied to a manufacturable article .
