When we talk about criminal law, one of the most serious offences that often comes up is culpable homicide . It's a term that confuses many — especially because it's closely related to murder, but they aren't exactly the same thing. With the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS) coming into force, certain sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) have been revised and renumbered. However, the essence of culpable homicide remains similar. What is Culpable Homicide? Culpable homicide literally means causing the death of a person by doing an act with the intention of causing death , or with the knowledge that the act is likely to cause death . Under the IPC , culpable homicide is defined in Section 299 . Under the new BNSS, 2023 , the same concept is reflected in Section 100 .
